Have you ever wondered how an insurance company would find out about that windshield you replaced last year? Companies use a nationwide database called C.L.U.E. that collects any and all claim information from every insurance company. In a few brief seconds, a company can find out how many claims you have had in the past five years. They will know when and how much money was paid out, and how or why it was paid out. This database will show everything from the largest accident or loss to the smallest glass chip repair or towing claim. This also includes claims paid to you for not-at-fault accidents such as a hit-and-run damage to your auto, or any claim to your own policy for your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits. Your driving history, often called your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), is also kept in a database through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). For insurance purposes, your driving record is often reviewed for violations occurring within the last 5 years. For minor violations, such as a speeding ticket, companies will usually look back those 5 years, but will often only count violations that occurred within the last 3 years. For major violations, such as a DWI, most preferred companies will look back and count for the entire 5 years. However, all hope is not lost for the individual who has a driving record that is in need of a little care. There are several companies that will only look back 35 months for ANY violation or accident. There are also a few companies that will write someone as a preferred driver as long as other factors, such as financial responsibility and prior insurance information, support a preferred rating class. This option is available even when the violations are recent. This information is general and is meant to be advisory only, and should not be relied upon for any insurance decisions. Please refer to your own insurance policy and company provisions for exact definitions and limits of coverages set forth in your policy contract. |
